Compatibility & Fit

What hole pattern do I need for my sander?

The hole pattern on your sandpaper should match the holes on your sander’s backing pad so dust can be pulled through and into the bag or dust extractor.

Common random orbital sander hole patterns include:

  • 5” discs – typically 5-hole or 8-hole patterns used on most random orbital sanders
  • 6” discs – often 6-hole, 15-hole, or 49-hole patterns used on professional sanders like Festool and Mirka.
  • Detail sanders – delta or triangular sheets for detail sanding.
  • Drywall sanders – large, often 9"/225mm discs with 9-hole or multi-hole patterns.

If you’re unsure which hole pattern you need, multi-hole or universal discs are often the safest choice. These designs allow dust extraction even when the holes don’t perfectly align with the pad.

Can I use 5-hole discs on an 8-hole sander (or vice versa)?

Yes, the sandpaper will still work even if the hole patterns do not match exactly.

However, when the holes don’t align with the sander pad, dust extraction becomes less effective and heat can build up if airflow is blocked.

For best performance, it’s ideal to use sandpaper with the same hole pattern as your sander. While we don't make 5-hole sanding discs, our 5" multi-hole and 5" mesh discs are both good options for those sanders.

Technical Questions

What is the difference between film-backed and paper-backed sandpaper?

The backing material determines how durable the sandpaper is during use.

Paper-backed sandpaper is the traditional option and is often used for light-duty sanding. It is inexpensive but can tear or crease under normal use.

Film-backed sandpaper uses a thin polyester film substrate instead of paper. Film is much stronger, more flexible, and far more resistant to tearing.

Benefits of film-backed abrasives include:

  • longer lifespan
  • resistance to tearing
  • consistent scratch pattern
  • wet or dry sanding capability

Most Serious Grit sanding discs use film backing, which helps them last longer and maintain consistent performance.

What are the benefits of ceramic sandpaper?

Ceramic abrasives are designed for high-performance cutting and longer life.

Compared with aluminum oxide abrasives, ceramic sandpaper:

cuts faster

lasts longer

stays sharper as it wears

In our controlled testing environment, our purple ceramic film sandpaper removed roughly 20% more material in the same amount of time as our green film sandpaper. For production environments, this increase in efficiency is meaningful.

Does Serious Grit sandpaper work on metal?

Yes. Serious Grit abrasives can be used on many metals including steel and aluminum.

Ceramic abrasives are particularly effective on metal because they maintain sharp cutting edges and resist premature wear.

For softer metals like aluminum, stearate-coated abrasives help reduce loading and improve disc life.

How do I know when sandpaper is worn out?

Worn sandpaper stops cutting effectively and begins to feel smooth.

Common signs include:

sanding progress slows

heat buildup occurs

the abrasive feels smooth instead of gritty

A common technique is the pencil test - draw pencil marks on the surface before sanding. If the marks disappear slowly, the abrasive is likely worn out.
